Scenes from An Evening Extraordinare
I participated in and experienced an incredible evening of poetry, music and dance at Poets for Ferguson: Pratt MFA Writing Edition on October 4th, 2014 at the Fowler Arts Center. Featured artists were all powerful wordsmiths and Ricarrdo Valentine Brother (hood) Dance! & Obiku!ka Dance magnificent. Selected readers from the Pratt MFA program in Writing & Activism and special guests were invited to participate in this monumental evening. Featured artists were Brother(hood) Dance! & Ob!ka Dance Company (w/ Ricarrdo Valentine) Songtress from Birds of a Fleather, Yesenia Montilla, Mikumari Caiyhe, Lynne Procope, Urban Word Youth Board 2014-2015, Aziza Barnes, Jayson Smith, Eduardo C. Corral, Cathy Linh Che and yours truly Lorraine Currelley.
Poets for Ferguson: Pratt MFA Writing Edition was inspired by Sasha Banks’ 24 hour national, live-streamed poetry reading which took place on September 27th, 2014. Poets for Ferguson: Pratt MFA Writing Edition was a fundraiser. As stated in the event’s advertisements the goal was to raise money to provide financial help to the protestors of Ferguson, MO. Fallacious arrests charges have lead to protesters accruing legal fees in the wake of the murder of Michael Brown. All money raised are being transferred to and distributed by Missourians Organizing for reform, and empowerment currently on the ground in the city of Ferguson. Everyone’s joy after each announcement of total donations amazing.
Thanks to Lia for providing a lovely event venue, Saretta Morgan, Mahogany Browne and everyone who helped to organize, and facilitate Poets for Ferguson: Pratt MFA Writing Edition. Shout outs to poets Charleen McClure, and Charan P. Morris in
attendance for the event.
